December 7, 2017
Summary: Temperatures on the average are roughly the same as 24 hours ago. Dew points are in the upper 20s to the lower 30s all the way up and down the line. With this in mind, look for yet another night of subfreezing weather which is discussed in the frost section below.
The overall pattern is very stable as a very strong upper high is centered over northern California. That center will park over central California Friday and Saturday, meaning the center of this massive high will be right overhead. Daytime highs will rise to above average, generally in the mid 60s north of Kern County, possibly even topping 70 in Kern County.
Surface high pressure is centered over northern Nevada and continues the vicious Santa Ana winds in southern California, although those winds will begin to relax somewhat tonight and Friday.
For the valley, it just means the status quo with hazy conditions and a patch or two of fog during the late night and early morning hours, but the air mass is too dry for anything more widespread.
In the medium range, there is nothing showing up on models that would break this pattern for the next two weeks.
Forecast: Mostly clear skies through Sunday with occasional high clouds. Mostly clear Sunday night through Thursday.

Winds: Winds will be less than10 MPH with periods of near calm conditions through Sunday.
Rain: Expect dry weather for at least the next seven to ten days.
Frost Information: Dew points this afternoon are in the upper 20s to lower 30s all the way up and down the line, meaning the air mass is still very dry. Temperatures are little changed from yesterday at this time and will end up in the mid 60s at most locations. There are some high, thin clouds off shore which are doing battle with the strong high over California. Some very thin clouds have moved into the south valley and we may see some overrunning high clouds over the next couple of days, but my feeling is they will be too thin to make much difference in overnight lows.
Coldest locations tonight will be down to 24 to 26 degrees in river bottom and like locations with most other locations between 27 and 31. Hillsides will again be above freezing.
The inversion tonight will be strong with temperatures at 34 feet anywhere from 4 to 8 degrees warmer.
Looking ahead to Saturday and Sunday mornings, I look for only slight moderation as this dry air mass has nowhere to go. That’ll mean pleasant afternoons with highs possibly in the mid to upper 60s, but colder locations will still dip down into at least the upper 20s with a chance of those frost pockets out there in the mid 20s.
Next week will be day to day as I don’t anticipate much change in the overall temperature regime with highs well into the 60s and overnight lows remaining below freezing, at least in the colder locations. So, we’re stuck in neutral here, but at least there is a strong inversion, so wind machines will be useful.
