December 8, 2017
Summary: At the risk of sounding repetitious, strong upper level high pressure continues to be centered over northern California with a big ridge northward into western Canada. Temperatures this afternoon are marginally warmer than yesterday with many locations already in the mid 60s. dew points remain low, generally in the upper 20s to the lower 30s, so there will be strong, radiational cooling again tonight. High, thin clouds will be visible from time to time as they dare to try to overrun high pressure currently in control.
Models continue to show the high remaining in place over the west coast for at least the next week or so, so above average daytime temperatures can be expected with overnight lows continuing to drop below average.
Surface high pressure also will remain in place, to one degree or another, over the Great Basin. Unfortunately, this will result in a continuation of the off shore flow.
Forecast: Mostly clear skies through Monday with occasional high clouds. Mostly clear Monday night through Friday.

Winds: Winds will be less than10 MPH with periods of near calm conditions through Monday.
Rain: Expect dry weather for at least the next seven to ten days.
Frost Information: This afternoon’s temperatures are about one to three degrees warmer than yesterday. The exception is Bakersfield which is actually one degree cooler, oddly enough. Dew points continue to be in the upper 20s to the lower 30s this afternoon with occasional high, thin clouds moving overhead. Last night, many locations dropped to between 26 and 30 and I would anticipate just slight moderation tonight. It’s doubtful whether those high, thin clouds above us will do any good as, number one they’re very thin, and number two they’re based at about 25,000 feet.
For tonight, coldest locations will drop to 26 to 27 or so with most flatland topography in the 28 to 31 degree range. Hillsides will again be above freezing.
The inversion tonight will be strong with temperatures at 34 feet generally ranging from 5 to 8 degrees warmer.
Looking ahead to the weekend, lows Sunday morning should range from 28 to 34 and I would ditto that for Monday and Tuesday. After that, we’ll study the situation and see if dew points start to creep up, which is doubtful as this dry, dingy air mass simply has nowhere to go.
