December 27, 2017
Summary: Visibilities this afternoon are about 3 to 4 miles from Madera southward to Bakersfield. Air temperatures are actually a bit cooler than 24 hours ago with readings generally in the upper 50s to the lower 60s. Upper level high pressure continues to be anchored off the California coast with the storm track moving into Washington and about the northern half of Oregon. These systems will continue to fling a few high clouds over central California, but little else. In fact, one batch of high clouds is currently in northern California and will move through during the late afternoon and evening hours with mostly clear skies returning after midnight.
The high will completely dominate the weather through the New Year’s weekend with mild weather in much of the western U.S. and bitterly cold weather from the central U.S. to the east coast.
Models are more in unison now for the weather for the first and second of January. Currently, they are suggesting the high will remain parked over California and off shore, maintaining dry weather. Some models peg January 6 as the date a cold storm will drop southward along the Canadian coast with heavy precipitation for northern and central California. This is the first time this possibility has shown up on models so for now we’ll take it with a grain of salt.
Forecast: Mostly clear tonight with some high clouds, mainly before midnight. Mostly clear Thursday through Sunday with a few patches of fog late nights and early mornings. Mostly clear Sunday night through Wednesday. Look for hazy conditions through the period.

Winds: Winds will be generally less than 10 MPH through Sunday with periods of near calm conditions.
Rain: Expect dry conditions for at least the next seven to ten days.
Frost Information: Temperatures are anywhere from 1 to 4 degrees lower than 24 hours ago. Dew points from Fresno southward are in the mid to upper 30s but north of that point, dew points are in the lower 40s. There will be a veil of high, thin clouds moving overhead during the first part of the night then generally clear skies will prevail after midnight.
Coldest locations last night made it down to 26-27 degrees with upper 20s to lower 30s elsewhere. It appears conditions tonight and over the next few nights will be similar with cold spots down to 26 to 27 and most other locations chilling to 28 to 33. Hillsides will be above freezing.
The inversion will again be good with temperatures 5 to 8 degrees warmer at most locations.
Longer term, there are still some uncertainties for the first and second of January, but models seem to be leaning towards the high hanging around, keeping California dry. After that, the next chance of rain will be about the sixth of January as some models show a strong storm system moving through. It seems that each time we see this, the next set of model runs completely blow it up, so we’ll see what happens this time around.
Meanwhile, mild afternoons and chilly nights will continue.
