Forecast

June 27, 2018/report

June 27, 2018

Summary: The marine layer has deepened to 2,100 feet and is moving through the Delta.  Some of this modified sea breeze may make it as far south as Madera County by the end of the day, but will probably not reach the remainder of the valley.  A trough of low pressure is currently entering the Pacific Northwest and extreme northern California.  This trough, weak as it may be, will move through northern and central California tonight and Thursday.  By tomorrow, temperatures will be back in double digits, leveling off into the low to mid 90s Friday.  The trough will move into the interior west over the weekend, allowing the eastern Pacific high to begin to build into California from the west.  As early as Saturday, we will jump right back into triple digits with some of the hottest temperatures of the year so far possibly being recorded Sunday and Monday.  Hottest locations could make it to between 105 and 107 with most locations between 101 and 105.

A new trough of low pressure will sag southward into the Pacific Northwest and eventually northern and central California by Tuesday.  The typical summertime pattern of marine air moving into the valley from time to time will once again reappear with temperatures once again falling back into the mid 90s by the middle of next week.

Forecast: Outside of some occasional high clouds, it will be mostly clear through Saturday.  Mostly clear Saturday night through Wednesday.

Two Week Outlook:  July 4 through July 10:  This model is indicating temperatures will be near to perhaps marginally above average.  It’s hinting that the monsoon will make a triumphant return during the first week in July, affecting mainly the Desert Southwest, although it does point to southeast California possibly becoming involved.  So, we’ll continue with dry weather through the period.

June:  As we head into the summer months, it appears this June will be mostly dry, as is typical.  Models are projecting higher than average pressure patterns during the month so look for temperatures, generally speaking, to be above average.

June, July, August:  All summers are hot in the San Joaquin Valley, and typically very dry.  This summer will be no exception.  If there’s any tendency on modeling at all it would be that upper level high pressure would be marginally stronger than average with temperatures also running marginally above average.  The monsoon season will begin in several weeks so it’s impossible to tell it will be an active one this year.  We’ll just have to wait and see.

Winds:  Winds today will be generally in the 5 to 15 MPH range and mainly out of the northwest this afternoon.  Winds tonight through Saturday will be out of the northwest at 10 to 15 MPH with local gusts to 25 MPH, mainly below the passes along the west side.  Winds Friday through Sunday will be generally light.

Rain:  Expect dry conditions indefinitely
