January 1, 2019 frost update

January 1, 2019

Summary:  We are receiving some help tonight so far from a totally unexpected source.  High clouds which have been moving south/southwest through Nevada are being enhanced by a lifting effect of the southern Sierra Nevada.  They are forming a reasonably dense layer of high clouds based at between 20,000 and 25,000 feet.  Elsewhere, there is also high clouds but they are much thinner.  These clouds, for now, are streaking right over Tulare and Kern Counties.  At the surface, we mentioned earlier this afternoon about higher than expected dew points from Porterville north.  Here it is after ten pm and the dew point/temperature spread is 0 at Fowler, Orange Cove, Reedley, Ivanhoe, Exeter, west Lindsay, east Lindsay, and Strathmore.  South of that line there’s still a good 3 to 6 degree spread.  What this means is, areas of fog will form and may affect temperatures in some areas, mainly from Porterville north.

As of 10:00pm, the coldest temperature I could find was 28 at Ivanhoe followed by 30  at Rio Bravo, madera, and west Porterville.  All locations are between 28 and 34 at this hour.

The high clouds I alluded to earlier will move out of the area over the next few hours, revealing a return to mostly clear skies.  Even though the temperature decent will be slow, colder locations will dip down to 23 to 25 degrees.  Most locations will range between 24 and 28 degrees unless fog becomes more widespread, in which case temperatures will be milder.  However, icing may become a problem.  Temperatures will not rise above the freezing mark until around 9:00am Wednesday.
