Forecast

May 30 2019/report

May 30, 2019

Summary: Temperatures yesterday finally struggled up into the mid 80s at most locations.  This is still 1 to 3 degrees below average for the date.  The main feature we’re looking at this morning is a weak upper low located over southwest Oregon.  It will drop southward to near the Bay Area by Friday evening and center somewhere near Kern County Saturday.  Models indicate this feature will be  moisture starved, but will add enough convection for more rounds of showers and thunderstorms over the Sierra Nevada and possibly even the Kern County mountains Friday through Sunday afternoons.  It is possible a stray shower or thunderstorm could work its way over the valley floor during this time frame, but the chance of measurable rain at any given location is very low.

By Sunday afternoon, the low will have continued to weaken as it sets up shop off the southern California coast.  This feature will maintain temperatures at seasonal average levels through Sunday then finally upper level high pressure will begin to build in from the west by Tuesday, driving temperatures into the mid to  upper 90s.  hottest locations by Wednesday or Thursday could tease with the century mark but as of now it looks like most locations will end up a tad below that level.

By next weekend, the high will flatten out, pushing temperatures down into the lower 90s as marine air begins to spill through the Delta and down the valley.  By the standards of this month, this is a benign forecast and hopefully this will continue for quite some time.

Forecast: Mostly clear today and tonight.  Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy Friday through Sunday.  Mostly clear Sunday night through Thursday with a warming trend.

Two Week Outlook: June 4 through June 10:  This model is showing a stronger ridge of upper level high pressure over the eastern Pacific and western U.S.  As a result, above average temperatures can be expected with little, to any, chance of precipitation.

May: As we now enter the dry season, precipitation chances, according to this model, will be that of most Mays, in other words, near seasonal.  Nothing too dramatic shows up as far as temperatures are concerned with readings near to marginally above average.

May, June, July: As we move through the late spring through mid summer, precipitation opportunities will be typical, in other words, not very high and that’s especially true for June and July.  For this 90 day period, temperatures are projected to run somewhat above seasonal values.

Winds:  Winds will be generally at or less than 12 MPH through Sunday with periods of near calm conditions during the night and morning hours.  Winds during the afternoon and evening will be mainly out of the northwest.

Rain: There will be the formation of showers and thunderstorms over the Sierra Nevada Friday through Sunday afternoons, and that may also be the case for the Kern County mountains.  It is possible a stray shower or thunderstorm could drift off the foothills and over the valley floor, but the chance of measurable rain during this time frame will be less than 20%.  Expect dry conditions from Sunday night through Thursday of next week.
