Forecast

June 6, 2019/report

June 6, 2019

Summary: The marine layer along the coast is rapidly deepening and is already surging through Pacheco Pass.  Winds there, at last report, were sustained at 22 MPH, gusting to 35.  At Fairfield, winds were sustained at 20 MPH, gusting to 28.  Currently, low pressure has dropped southward out of the Gulf of Alaska and is centered near Vancouver Island this  morning with a weak trough extending southward into northern and central California.  The combination of cooler air moving in aloft and a big push of  modified sea breeze into the valley means temperatures will lower below the century mark today and will drop all the way into the low to mid 80s Friday.  As that modified sea breeze surges inland, gusty winds can be expected, especially this afternoon, and at times through Friday with local gusts to near 35 MPH possible, especially towards the center and west side of the valley. Local areas of blowing dust are certainly possible.

As soon as this trough moves through, upper level high pressure will begin to replace the trough as it  moves into the northern Rockies Friday evening.  Upper level high pressure over the eastern Pacific will expand into California for rapid warming, particularly Sunday through Tuesday.  Temperatures should be back in the upper 90s by Monday and the lower 100s Tuesday and Wednesday.  By next Thursday, the high will flatten out in response to a much weaker trough moving through the Pacific Northwest.  This should allow for a shallow intrusion of marine air into the valley, lowering temperatures down closer to seasonal levels.

Forecast: Mostly clear skies through Sunday.  Mostly clear Sunday night through Thursday.

Two Week Outlook: June 12 through June 18:  This model is showing a stronger ridge of upper level high pressure over the eastern Pacific and western U.S.  As a result, above average temperatures can be expected with little, to any, chance of precipitation.

June: The first month of meteorological summer indicates temperatures will only be marginally above average over northern and central California.  In other words, patterns for early summer should be fairly typical.  The usual generally dry conditions will prevail.

June, July, August: If this model has any grip at all on the pattern for summer of 2019, it is the fact that it will be a hot one, even hotter than usual.  As a more persistent ridge remains over the west and lower pressure over the middle of the country the usual generally dry conditions will prevail.

Winds:  Winds by late morning will be out of the west to  northwest at 10 to 20 MPH, continuing through Friday evening.  Local gusts to 35 MPH are possible this afternoon and tonight, mainly along the west side but locally elsewhere, especially from Fresno County north.  Winds Saturday through Sunday will be generally at or less than 15 MPH and mainly out of the northwest afternoons and evenings.

Rain: Expect dry conditions for at least the next seven to ten days.
