Forecast

June 10, 2019/report

June 10, 2019

Summary: Temperatures are running on the average 7 to 9 degrees higher than 24 hours ago.  Freezing levels have jumped up to 15,000 feet and the marine layer has peeled back to 400 feet along the central coast.  All are key indicators of hot weather ahead.  There are two high centers interconnecting.  The first is along the Oregon/northern California coast.  The second is over the Desert Southwest.  Temperatures will push into the lower 100s today then peak Tuesday with hottest locations in the 104 to 107 degree range.  Models show very low dew points so humidity values will be very dry during the afternoons.

By late Wednesday, the high will begin to flatten out somewhat over the Pacific Northwest and will generally begin a slow weakening process Thursday and Friday.  Over the weekend, a weak trough of low pressure will move inland to our north, lowering temperatures into the low to  mid 90s.

For Monday through Wednesday of next week, models diverge quite a bit.  Some place an upper low somewhere over  northern or central California, lowering temperatures and also giving an increasing chance of afternoon and evening thunderstorms over the Sierra Nevada and possibly even the Kern County mountains.  The two week model, which takes us through the 23rd, is indicating above average temperatures and the usual dry temperatures continuing.

Forecast: Other than some high, thin clouds at times, it will be mostly clear and hot through Wednesday.  Mostly clear and less hot Thursday through Monday.

Two Week Outlook: June 17 through June 23:  This model is showing a stronger ridge of upper level high pressure over the eastern Pacific and western U.S.  As a result, above average temperatures can be expected with little, to any, chance of precipitation.

June: The first month of meteorological summer indicates temperatures will only be marginally above average over northern and central California.  In other words, patterns for early summer should be fairly typical.  The usual generally dry conditions will prevail.

June, July, August: If this model has any grip at all on the pattern for summer of 2019, it is the fact that it will be a hot one, even hotter than usual.  As a more persistent ridge remains over the west and lower pressure over the middle of the country the usual generally dry conditions will prevail.

Winds:  Winds will be generally at or below 15 MPH through Thursday.

Rain: Expect dry conditions for at least the next seven to ten days.
