Forecast

June 13, 2019/report

June 13, 2019

Summary: The marine layer at Monterey yesterday at this time had a depth of just 300 feet.  Twenty four hours later, the depth is now 2,100 feet deep.  Satellite imagery indicates a considerable amount of low clouds and fog have returned to the central and northern California coast.  The sea breeze is beginning to surge through the Delta. Winds at Travis Air Force Base are sustained at 24 MPH, gusting to 31 MPH.  Pacheco Pass appears to be open for business, as well, as winds on top of the dam at San Luis Reservoir are gusting to 25 MPH and below the dam at Los Banos, winds are gusting to 28.

Modified marine air will not have much of an impact on the central or south valley today, however a weak trough of low pressure is moving  through so I do look for synoptic cooling which should lower temperatures into the upper 90s to the lower 100s.  Tomorrow will be a tad bit cooler as a temporary shallow marine layer makes its presence known.

We’re into the time of year now where changes are subtle.  A minor warming trend will occur over the weekend with widespread upper 90s.   A large eastern Pacific high will be parked off the northern California coast  Monday through Wednesday of next week.  Central California will be on the southeastern fringe of this high which should allow temperatures to move back into the lower 100s, but for now it does not appear we will endure the excessive heat of the past two days.  Yesterday, Bakersfield was the hot spot with 108 degrees.

Forecast: Mostly clear skies through Sunday.  Mostly clear skies will continue Sunday night through Thursday.

Two Week Outlook: June 20 through June 26:  This model has flip flopped a bit and indicates a trough of low pressure will be the more dominant feature during this time frame.  If this happens, a welcome cooling trend will occur with temperatures near to possibly marginally below average with the usual dry conditions continuing.

June: The first month of meteorological summer indicates temperatures will only be marginally above average over northern and central California.  In other words, patterns for early summer should be fairly typical.  The usual generally dry conditions will prevail.

June, July, August: If this model has any grip at all on the pattern for summer of 2019, it is the fact that it will be a hot one, even hotter than usual.  As a more persistent ridge remains over the west and lower pressure over the middle of the country the usual generally dry conditions will prevail.

Winds:  Winds will be out of the west to northwest later this afternoon at 10 to 15 MPH with gusts to 25 MPH and possibly 30 MPH along the west side.  Winds Friday will continue to be mainly out of the northwest at 8 to 15 MPH with local gusts to 25 MPH.  Winds Saturday through Sunday will be generally at or less than 15 MPH and mainly out of the northwest afternoons and evenings.

Rain: Expect dry conditions for at least the next seven to ten days.
