Summary: upper level high pressure remains off the California coast with a ridge as far north as southern British Columbia. Meanwhile, the first of two polar air masses is diving into the Midwest. The other feature of note is a benign upper low off the southern California/northern Baja California coast. This has the winds at the mid and upper levels of the atmosphere out of the east which is reflected in some locally gusty winds over the Kern County mountains and it marginally contributes to the 80 plus degree weather on the valley floor. The high will maintain itself through the weekend then the upper low will move eastward through northwest Mexico Monday, turning the winds aloft out of the north/northeast which will set up another off shore flow. This pattern will continue through Tuesday then the high will begin to flatten out a bit over the Pacific Northwest Wednesday but will hold firm over California through much of next week.
Around the 16th, some kind of low pressure system is projected by some models to move through California. One model actually shows this system as picking up subtropical moisture and moving that moisture into southern California and the Desert Southwest with only a chance of light showers for central California. Once this system goes through, we may see a strong low develop over the Desert Southwest as a sharp ridge of high pressure builds just off shore and forms a ridge all the way into western Canada and even Alaska. This pattern is conducive for a strong off shore flow event which could last a few days. The bad news is that this ridge will again be an effective block for any storminess to move into California.
