Summary: The center of circulation of our ridge of upper level high pressure is directly overhead this afternoon. As a result, temperatures are running roughly 3 degrees higher than 24 hours ago, with temperatures in the low 80s this afternoon. As of 1:00pm, Bakersfield had already reached 80 degrees and Castle Air Force Base Merced was at 81. We will observe one more day of hazy, very warm conditions Wednesday but increasing amounts of higher clouds from an off shore trough may lower temperatures from 1 to 3 degrees or so.
That trough will be approaching the California coast Thursday then will move inland in two weak waves. The first will move in Thursday afternoon and evening with variable cloudiness and somewhat cooler temperatures, but no rain. The second will approach the coast Friday morning but will split with one section moving into the Pacific Northwest and northern California and the southern portion pinching off and forming a cut off low well off the southern California coast. This will ensure dry weather through the weekend and into early next week. In fact, upper level high pressure will begin to fill in from the west Saturday through Monday, driving temperatures back into the mid 70s by Sunday and Monday.
Models are still trending towards a sharp ridge of high pressure building far to the north into Alaska Tuesday while a low develops over western Canada and shoots rapidly southward into the Pacific Northwest. That low will move into California next Wednesday. I wouldn’t completely rule out the chance of showers but for now, if they occur at all, it would likely be just over the higher elevations. By Thursday, the low will shift into the Rocky Mountain region, allowing high pressure to again move in from the west with the main storm track aimed at the Pacific Northwest.
Forecast: Mostly clear tonight with some high clouds mixing in. variable high cloudiness with considerable sunshine Wednesday. variable cloudiness Wednesday night through Friday. Clearing Friday night. mostly clear Saturday through Monday night. increasing cloudiness Tuesday.
