Forecast

January 23, 2020/pm update

January 23, 2020

Summary: Most of the fog and low clouds from this morning have dissipated, although there are pockets of low clouds, mainly over western Kings and Kern Counties.  High clouds are increasing over northern California ahead of a weak trough of low pressure which will spread light showers down to a Bay Area/Tahoe line late tonight and Friday morning.  there will be some increase in cloud cover over central California.  The progressive pattern of troughs of low pressure and ridges of high pressure moving from west to east across California will continue through the weekend.

The next ridge of high pressure will move through Friday night and Saturday morning with the next trough of low pressure moving through later Saturday night and Sunday.  This will be our last, best hope for measurable rain for the valley for the remainder of the month.  Models this afternoon seem to be nudging the southern limit of precipitation a bit further north so it’s possible Kern County may receive little to possibly no precipitation Saturday night and Sunday with potentially lesser amounts further north, as well.

Following this storm, a flat zone of upper level high pressure will cover the eastern Pacific and California Monday through Wednesday with weather systems riding over the top of the high and into the Pacific Northwest with possible light showers over the northern 1/3 of California.  Beginning Wednesday night, the high will build further north, clamping down on central California with a considerable amount of night and morning fog and low clouds.  Clearing can be expected in most areas during the afternoons.

Models going out all the way through February 5 are indicating only low chances of precipitation at best with generally above average temperatures.

Forecast: Areas of low clouds and fog tonight and again Friday night.  partly cloudy Friday afternoon with increasing higher clouds Saturday afternoon.  Mostly cloudy Saturday night through Sunday night with light showers after midnight Saturday night through Sunday, mainly north of Kern County.  Mostly cloudy with areas of fog and low clouds Monday morning.  partly cloudy Monday through Wednesday with areas of low clouds and fog each morning.  mostly clear Wednesday night and Thursday with areas of fog and low clouds Thursday morning.

Winds: Winds will be at or less than 6 MPH through Sunday with periods of near calm conditions.

Rain:  The chance for light showers will begin to increase after midnight Saturday, continuing through Sunday.  Models this afternoon are nudging the southern limit of the precipitation shield a bit further north.  It’s possible Kern County may receive very little if any precipitation at all with potentially lighter amounts of precipitation north of Kern County.  For now, it would appear Kern County would receive nothing to less than .10 with .25 or less north of Kern County.  Dry weather will return Sunday night.  the storm track will migrate further north Monday through Wednesday and even further north after Wednesday.  it appears likely that after Sunday, the remainder of January, possibly even into the first five days of February, will be dry.

Frost Discussion:  All locations will be above 32 degrees tonight and each night for the remainder of the week and, if models are correct, well into next week, as well.
