Forecast

July 2, 2020/report

July 2, 2020

Summary:  Temperatures currently are running generally2 to 4 degrees lower than 24 hours ago.  This is due to a burst of modified marine air that surged through the Delta and, to a lesser extent, through the gaps and passes of the Coast Range overnight.  At last report, the marine layer at Monterey had risen to 2,800 feet.  Winds in the Delta were out of the southwest, sustained at 26 MPH, gusting to 31 with winds gusting to 30 MPH at Pacheco Pass and 22 MPH at Los Banos.  Yesterday, Los Banos had a high of just 88 degrees due to the sea breeze moving through the Pass.

The weather in the short term will cool off just a tad this afternoon due to the marine influence then will begin to slowly rise as we move through the Fourth of July weekend.  In the big picture, low pressure is centered over western Canada with a weak trough extending from that low southward into northern California.  The main center of high pressure is now taking shape over northern Mexico and will expand into the Desert Southwest over the weekend.  This will create a very dry west/southwest flow aloft between persistent low pressure over the Pacific Northwest and upper level high pressure over the Desert Southwest.

By early next week, a zone of high pressure will extend from the Midwest westward to the Baja and southern California coast.  Temperatures for the valley will be a balancing act between the low to our north and high pressure to our south.  Over the weekend, temperatures at the warmest locations will tease with the century mark with possibly even a marginal cooling trend late next week due to a weak impulses moving into northern California.  The bottom line is that it’s now July and for the next week, look for seasonal conditions, meaning very dry weather under a west/southwest flow aloft.

Forecast:  Clear skies through Sunday.  Clear skies will continue Sunday night through Thursday.

Two Week Outlook:  July 9 through July 15:  This model is indicating a fairly typical summer pattern with high pressure dominating over the eastern Pacific, extending over California into the Desert Southwest.  Temperatures will be marginally above average with typical dry conditions continuing.

July:  This model indicates warmer than average temperatures over the next four weeks.  The usual dry pattern will prevail in the San Joaquin Valley with the chance of precipitation on any given day being almost nil.  Average precipitation for the month is .01.

July, August, September:  This time of year, the 90 day out look is no secret.  July and August will be hot and dry while September has a minor risk of precipitation, mainly from the tropics.  This out look appears fairly typical.  Marginally above average temperatures are expected with near average precipitation, which is a meaningless projection.

Winds Discussion: Locally gusty westerly winds will continue today along the west side of the valley to 25 MPH.  Winds elsewhere will be mainly out of the northwest at 5 to 12 MPH with locally stronger gusts this afternoon. Winds Friday through Sunday will be mainly out of the northwest at 5 to 12 MPH afternoons and evenings and variable to 7 MPH nights and mornings with periods of near calm conditions.

Rain Discussion: Expect dry conditions for the next 7 to 10 days.
