Forecast

July 23, 2020/report

July 23, 2020

Summary:  Essentially, a very weak upper low is located over Merced County this morning.  there is no cloud cover associated with this feature.  However, it should add enough lift to the atmosphere for the development of isolated thunderstorms over the southern Sierra Nevada from roughly Kings Canyon northward.  Minor lowering of  pressures aloft combined with a push of marine air into the valley will lower temperatures into the mid 90s this afternoon.  The low will dissipate tonight and Friday, however pressures aloft will still be weak so near average temperatures can be expected over the weekend.

Upper level high pressure which has been parked over Texas the past few days is expected to shift further west by early next week.  There are models this morning that show the monsoon shifting further to the west, as well, possibly moving mid and high level moisture into southern California.  Temperatures by Monday at the hottest locations will warm into the lower 100s due to increasing pressures aloft.  Upper level high pressure will be centered over the Four Corners region Monday through Wednesday of next week and will link up with another high located several hundred miles off the southern California coast.  This is a typical pattern for late July and generally results in, what else, dry weather for the valley and a chance of afternoon and evening thunderstorms over the southern Sierra Nevada.

Forecast:  Clear skies through Sunday.  Mostly clear Sunday night through Thursday.

Two Week Outlook:  July 30 through August 5:  Upper level high pressure will be entrenched over the Desert Southwest.  The monsoon will be active over Arizona and possibly even into southern California.  Temperatures under this regime will run marginally above average with no rain expected.

July:  This model indicates warmer than average temperatures over the next four weeks.  The usual dry pattern will prevail in the San Joaquin Valley with the chance of precipitation on any given day being almost nil.  Average precipitation for the month is .01.

July, August, September:  This time of year, the 90 day out look is no secret.  July and August will be hot and dry while September has a minor risk of precipitation, mainly from the tropics.  This out look appears fairly typical.  Marginally above average temperatures are expected with near average precipitation, which is a meaningless projection.

Winds Discussion: Winds through this evening will be mainly out of the northwest at 8 to 15 MPH with stronger gusts, mainly along the west side.  Winds Friday through Sunday will be mainly out of the northwest afternoons and evenings at 5 to 12 MPH, becoming light and variable during the overnight hours.

Rain Discussion: Expect dry conditions for the next 7 to 10 days.
