Forecast

July 25, 2020/report

July 25, 2020

Summary:  Changes over the next week or so will be subtle.  Short term, a slow warming trend will continue through Tuesday with readings generally leveling off in the lower 100s which is marginally above average for this time of year.  The marine layer this morning stands at 1,900 feet.  There is a minor leakage of sea breeze into the Delta as winds there are out of the southwest sustained at 15 MPH.  that will not be enough to benefit the majority of the valley.

In the big picture, a very weak trough of low pressure remains over California.  This trough will be nudged off shore as upper level high pressure over the southwestern U.S. links up with another high off the southern California coast.

The monsoon has been very persistent lately in moving up through eastern Arizona and New Mexico.  The winds over central California will either be out of the west or southwest for the next 5 to 7 days, meaning generally cloudless skies with the exception of a few buildups over the southern Sierra Nevada afternoons and evenings.

Forecast:  Clear skies through Tuesday.  Mostly clear Tuesday night through Saturday.

Two Week Outlook:  August 1 through August 7:  Upper level high pressure will be entrenched over the Desert Southwest.  The monsoon will be active over Arizona and possibly even into southern California.  Temperatures under this regime will run marginally above average with no rain expected.

August:  Typically, especially this time of year, long range outlooks by NOAA reflect the global warming madness.  This model indicates above average temperatures and largely dry conditions.

August, September, October:  Just like the 30 day outlook, this longer range outlook reflects above average temperatures everywhere, including California.  This model does not reflect either above or below average precipitation, although as we head into September we will have to keep a closer eye on the tropics.

Winds Discussion: Winds through this evening will be mainly out of the northwest at 8 to 15 MPH with stronger gusts, mainly along the west side.  Winds Sunday through Tuesday will be mainly out of the northwest afternoons and evenings at 5 to 12 MPH, becoming light and variable during the overnight hours.

Rain Discussion: Expect dry conditions for the next 7 to 10 days.
