Summary: Most of the remnants of former Hurricane Elida have moved west or northwest. However, there’s still a batch of mid and high level clouds which will move through this morning. most of southern California has already cleared out. Yesterday, there were trace amounts of rain on the valley floor with a couple of exceptions. Coalinga recorded .01 while Avenal picked up at .14. The chance of rain is about over now with the exception of the Sierra Nevada.
Now we look ahead to a pending heat wave which will last at least a week. Upper level high pressure is slowly building over Arizona and southern California. Most of the model information this morning projects the center of the high will end up over the Great Basin. Not only is this a pattern conducive for intense heat, it will also create a southerly flow beginning Sunday and lasting through much of next week. Monsoon moisture will occasionally work into central and southern California with daily chances of afternoon and evening thunderstorms over the Sierra Nevada and periods of mid and high level clouds over the valley floor. For now, I don’t believe there will be enough cloud cover to stifle the heat wave.
Triple digits will continue all the way into next weekend. A weak trough moving into the Pacific Northwest just may nudge the strong high further south and east later next weekend for at least a minimal cooling trend.
Forecast: partly cloudy this morning. Clearing and hot this afternoon. Mostly clear Saturday and continued hot. Partly cloudy Saturday evening through Monday and continued hot. Mostly clear and continued hot Monday night through Friday with occasional periods of mid and high level clouds.

Two Week Outlook: August 20 through August 26: This model indicates upper level high pressure over the desert southwest will be the more dominant feature, resulting in at least marginally above average temperatures. The monsoon is still nowhere to be found, so dry dusty conditions will continue.
August: Typically, especially this time of year, long range outlooks by NOAA reflect the global warming madness. This model indicates above average temperatures and largely dry conditions.
August, September, October: Just like the 30 day outlook, this longer range outlook reflects above average temperatures everywhere, including California. This model does not reflect either above or below average precipitation, although as we head into September, we will have to keep a closer eye on the tropics.
Winds Discussion: Winds through Monday will be mainly out of the northwest at 5 to 12 MPH afternoons and evenings and 3 to 6 MPH nights and early mornings with periods of near calm conditions.
Rain Discussion: No rain is expected for at least the next 7 to 10 days.
Afternoon Dew Points Today: Low to mid 60s. Kern: Upper 50s to the lower 60s.
