November 11, 2020/pm update

November 11, 2020

Summary: Temperatures, at least in the warmer locations as of 1:00pm, have struggled up to the 60 degree mark for the first time since last Friday.  Most locations are 2 to 3 degrees warmer than 24 hours ago, however in Kern County most locations are generally from 4 to 6 degrees warmer than yesterday at this time.

A veil of high thin clouds based at 25,000 feet is over central California this afternoon.  There are also some scattered clouds based at 12,000 feet.  These clouds will be in and out all night due to a weak upper air disturbance located roughly 450 miles to our west.

The flow aloft, which is currently out of the northwest, will become more westerly with time, pumping progressively warmer air in aloft.  This is already evident this afternoon as many locations at around 4,000 feet are reporting readings in the low to mid 60s.

The next low pressure system will move out of the northeast Pacific and into the Pacific Northwest.  The thrust of this system is more southeasterly than southerly.  Showers will spread over northern California Friday night and Saturday morning down to roughly a Bay Area/Stockton/Yosemite line with only some increase in cloud cover over the valley floor.

A flat zone of upper level high pressure will set up shop over the eastern Pacific Saturday night through Monday, deflecting the storm track further north.  It still appears a trough of low pressure will move through central California Tuesday or Wednesday of next week.  The chance for rain, though, appears less likely with each medium range model that comes across my desk.

Forecast: Patchy late night and early morning fog.  Otherwise it will be partly cloudy tonight.  partly cloudy Thursday through Saturday with patchy late night and early morning fog.  Mostly clear Saturday night through Monday night with patchy night and morning fog.  Variable cloudiness Tuesday through Wednesday.

Winds: Winds during the afternoon will be variable to no more than 10 MPH.  Winds during the night and morning hours will be generally at or less than 5 MPH with extended periods of near calm conditions.

Rain:  The chance of rain for the next week now appears fairly dismal.  It is a given we will be dry through at least Monday night.  for the past several days, models were indicating a fairly decent trough of low pressure would move through central California at roughly midweek.  Newest models show the rain line will be a bit further north, greatly reducing the chance of rain for central California.

Frost:  Only the coldest unprotected locations will dip down to 30 to 32 degrees with most locations ranging from 33 to 37 degrees.  Portions of Kern County could be even milder.  A weak upper air disturbance off shore is throwing in a veil of high clouds over the valley this afternoon.  This will continue on and off through the night. Satellite imagery does indicate there are breaks in the overcast off shore.

The very coldest locations tonight, if skies clear, will dip down to 29 or 30.

This is the last night we will mention below freezing temperatures for a while as short and medium range models continue to show a milder air mass sliding into California with slowly rising dew points.  Even long range models look pretty mild as generally a west to east flow will be dominant.
