November 12, 2020
Summary: It is a gorgeous autumn afternoon out there with most locations now moving into the mid 60s, a good 3 to 5 degrees warmer than 24 hours ago. We are temporarily in a clear spot between a weak disturbance that dissipated over southern California and the next storm to move out of the northeast Pacific and into the Pacific Northwest. Rain is now spreading over western Washington and will quickly spread over Oregon then into northern California Friday. Models still show light showers moving as far south as a Monterey/Merced line later Friday afternoon and night with a minimal chance of sprinkles as far south as Fresno County. It’s possible Merced County could pick up a few hundredths but for now only trace amounts are anticipated further south.
This is a fast mover with the system already into the Great Basin by midday Saturday. by Saturday night, upper level high pressure will be building off the central and southern California coast then the high will build further inland, centering over southern California Monday through Tuesday. Readings exceeding the 70 degree mark are anticipated Monday through Wednesday next week, especially Tuesday and Wednesday when the flow aloft becomes southwesterly ahead of a developing trough of low pressure projected to move through southern California Thursday and Friday.
For now, this does not appear to be a particularly wet system. As has been the case recently, the lion’s share of the moisture will move into the Pacific Northwest and, to a lesser extent, northern California.
Forecast: Other than patchy late night and early morning fog, it will be mostly clear tonight with some patchy clouds. Increasing clouds Friday leading to a small chance of sprinkles or isolated light showers, mainly from Fresno County north later Friday afternoon and night. mostly to partly cloudy Saturday morning, becoming mostly clear in the afternoon. Mostly clear Saturday night through Tuesday. Partly cloudy Tuesday night and Wednesday. Variable cloudiness Wednesday night with a chance of showers Thursday.

Winds: Winds during the afternoon will be variable to no more than 10 MPH. Winds during the night and morning hours will be generally at or less than 5 MPH with extended periods of near calm conditions.
Rain: The next weather system will spread light showers as far south as a Monterey/Merced/Kings Canyon line. Leaving a little room for error, we need to keep small chance of isolated light sprinkles in the forecast as far south as Fresno County late Friday afternoon through the later evening hours. Dry weather will return late Saturday night and continue through at least Wednesday night of next week. Models are continuing to move back the timing of a trough of low pressure which most models do now show moving through central California late Thursday or Friday.
Frost: The only locations to reach the freezing mark tonight will be river bottom and similar sink hold type terrain. Most flat terrain locations will chill down to about 33 to 37 degrees. This is the last frost forecast for now to mention the term “below freezing” as all medium range models indicate a mild pattern through next week. Even though a trough of low pressure will move through about Wednesday of next week, the flow behind it is expected to be out of the west or perhaps the west/northwest, keeping temperatures nice and toasty for the season.
