Forecast

January 31. 2021/report

January 31, 2021

A trough of low pressure extends from off the British Columbia coast southwestward to off the northern California coast.  Light showers are occurring as far south as Ukiah near the coast and Redding inland.   There are two streams of cloud cover moving into California.  The first is associated with the above mentioned trough of low pressure.  The second is subtropical cloud cover being transported into the southern half of the state courtesy of the southern branch of the jet stream.  Even in spite of all the cloud cover, temperatures will warm into the 60s through Tuesday.  As the trough of low pressure sinks southward, it will develop a secondary low off the central coast, slowing its progress.  Precipitation will probably not arrive until later Tuesday afternoon with periods of rain into Wednesday, possibly even Wednesday night.

The low will move into the southwestern U.S. later Thursday and Friday as a mammoth high covers the eastern Pacific, ridging into Alaska.  Bitterly cold arctic air will plunge south/southeast into the Rockies and Midwest U.S. Thursday night through next weekend, leaving them in an arctic grip while temperatures over the wester ¼ of the U.S. remain temperate as we will be on the eastern flank of the off shore high.  No chance of precipitation from Thursday to possibly the next seven to fourteen days thereafter.

Forecast: Variable cloudiness through Monday with patchy night and morning fog.  Cloudy Monday night through Wednesday.  periods of rain Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday.  a chance of showers Wednesday night.  Partly to mostly cloudy Thursday morning.  clearing in the afternoon.  Mostly clear Thursday night through Sunday with areas of patchy night and morning fog and low clouds.

Two Week Outlook:  February 7 through February 13:  This  model shows only a minimal chance of rain during this time frame.  It also indicates we will be on the western side of a cold low, resulting in below average temperatures.

February: Both the 30 and 90 day outlooks reflect a La Nina pattern with below average precipitation over the southern 2/3 of California and above average precip over parts of the Pacific Northwest and northern California.  Temperatures should be close to seasonal averages.

February, March, April: Precipitation will continue to be above average over the Pacific Northwest and roughly the northern ¼ of California with the southern 2/ 3 of California having below average precipitation.  Temperatures should be marginally above average.

Winds Discussion: Winds will be generally at or less than 10 MPH through Monday evening with periods of near calm conditions.  Winds late Monday night and Tuesday will be out of the southeast at 8 to 15 MPH with stronger gusts.  Winds Tuesday night and Wednesday will be mostly out of the west to northwest at 10 to 15 MPH with stronger gusts.

Rain Discussion:  Newest forecast models continue to show the trend of the arrival time of precipitation in the valley.  This is due to an anticipated formation of a secondary low off the central coast Tuesday and Tuesday night.  periods of rain will likely last through Wednesday, tapering off into showers Wednesday night.  Rainfall amounts from this event could potentially be halfway decent with generally between .25 and .50 north of Kern County and around .10 to .25 over the valley portion of Kern County.  A prolonged period of dry weather will begin Thursday which should last at least a week and possibly ten days.

Frost Discussion: Expect above freezing conditions for the next week to ten days.
