Forecast

February 27, 2021/update

February 27, 2021

Summary:  Winds along the west side of the valley continue to be strong and gusty this afternoon.  Currently, winds are gusting to 31 MPH at the Lemoore NAS, 33 MPH at Huron, 35 at Harris Ranch, and 40 MPH at Panoche Road.  Winds towards the center, south, and east side of the valley are generally around 12 MPH.

The off shore flow which is currently out of the north/northeast will become briefly southeasterly Sunday which could bring about some downslope winds along the north facing slopes of the Tehachapi.  These winds, if they occur, will be short lived as pressure differences begin to equalize Sunday afternoon.  With another shot of dry air mixing down to the valley floor, widespread low to mid 30s can be expected Sunday and Monday mornings with even a few isolated upper 20s in river bottom type locations.

A fundamental change will finally take place Sunday night and Monday as the high is suppressed southward in response to a weak low moving southward off the northern California coast.  Models place this system just west of Santa Maria early Wednesday morning, then it’s expected to move across southern California Wednesday.  a few sprinkles could occur, mainly over the higher elevations.  Once this system goes through, a zonal or westerly flow will develop for the remainder of the week, resulting in mild temperatures and higher dew points.  Models have completely backed off on any chance of precipitation for the next week and possibly longer.

Forecast: Mostly clear skies through Monday night.  partly cloudy later Tuesday through Wednesday with a slight chance of sprinkles,  mainly in Kern County.  Mostly clear Wednesday night through Saturday.

Winds: The gusty winds along the west side of the valley will taper off this evening with winds of generally at or less than 7 MPH tonight and near calm conditions after midnight.  It’s possible on Sunday morning that localized gusty, south to southeast winds of up to 35 MPH may occur along the base of the Tehachapi Mountains.  Otherwise, winds will be at or less than 12 MPH late mornings and afternoons and 6 MPH nights and mornings with periods of near calm conditions Sunday afternoon through Tuesday.

Rain: A rapidly weakening low pressure system will move through the southern half of California Tuesday night and Wednesday.  a few sprinkles are possible, but not likely, mainly from Kern County southward.  Otherwise, the next seven days will be dry.

Frost: Yet another injection of dry air is infiltrating the valley this afternoon, mostly in the form of gusty northerly winds along the west side of the valley.  Elsewhere, dew points are still in the low to mid 30s.  two more rounds of widespread low to mid 30s will occur Sunday and Monday mornings with isolated river bottom type terrain briefly in the upper 20s.  By Tuesday morning, lows will be dragged up by increasing dew points and temperatures Monday topping 70 degrees.  After Tuesday, a westerly flow will break through, spreading in milder air aloft and raising dew points, finally putting an end to the low to mid 30s regime.
