Forecast

June 2, 2021/report

June 2, 2021

Both Lemoore and Taft registered highs of 107 yesterday for tops in the valley.  Los Banos, on the other hand, had a high of 99.  That location benefited from some leaking modified marine air through Pacheco Pass.  The center of circulation of a strong dome of upper level high pressure will be right overhead during the next 48 hours.  Temperatures well above the century mark will continue through Friday.  There is enough difference in pressure between San Francisco and Las Vegas to allow a shallow intrusion of marine air into the Delta region and possibly through Pacheco Pass.  At last report, winds at Travis AFB in the Delta were out of the southwest at 25 MPH.  At Pacheco Pass, winds are out of the west at 14 MPH, gusting to 23 MPH.  the current altimeter reading at San Francisco is 29.92 inches of mercury while Las Vegas was reporting 29.81.  this is not enough of a difference to tug any sea breeze down the valley.  The freezing level remains very high for this early in the season at 16,600 feet.

Over the weekend, the high will break down over the Pacific Northwest.  This will slowly weaken the high over California.  Even so, triple digits may last through Saturday.  blended model information point to readings near the century mark Sunday, as well.  On Monday, the high will finally be suppressed southward as a weak trough of low pressure moves through the Pacific Northwest and northern California.  The onshore flow will increase and the marine layer will deepen, allowing for a more significant cooling trend and lowering temperatures to near seasonal values by the middle of next week.

Models for late next week through the following weekend are indicating a stronger trough of low pressure will move through the western US, possibly lowering temperatures below average.

Forecast: Mostly clear and hot through Saturday.  Mostly clear Saturday night through Monday with a slow cooling trend.  Mostly clear and cooler Tuesday through Wednesday.

Two Week Outlook:  June 9 through June 15:  This model has reversed its pattern and now indicates a trough of low pressure will be more dominant along the west coast.  With some luck, below average temperatures will prevail, however there remains little to no chance of precipitation.

June:  This model is indicating a ridge of upper level high pressure will be more dominant over the Desert Southwest and, to a lesser extent, California, resulting in above average temperatures for the month with the usual dry conditions prevailing.

June, July, August: This model mimics the pattern of recent years, indicating high pressure over the Desert Southwest being the most dominant feature, resulting  in above average temperatures.  Theoretically, this pattern blocks monsoonal moisture from moving northward.  Typically, there’s little to no precipitation anyway, and that will be the case this summer.

Winds Discussion:  Winds during the afternoons and evenings will be mainly out of the northwest at 8 to 15 MPH with locally stronger gusts.  Winds during the night and morning hours will be mainly out of the northwest at 5 to 10 MPH with periods of near calm conditions, through Saturday.
