A weak trough of low pressure is currently moving through the Pacific Northwest and northern California. However, it’s beginning to slide northward, allowing temperatures to begin to rise over central California. The freezing level has risen to 16,100 feet. That should allow temperatures to stay in the mid 90s this afternoon. A few hot spots may briefly make it into the upper 90s. another prolonged heat wave is on the way. Currently, it does not appear to be the type of heat wave that would peel the skin off your head, but rather one that will end up in the 101 to 106 range, at least through Wednesday and possibly Thursday of next week.
As the storm track continues to move further north, upper level high pressure will merge with another high over the Midwestern US. The warm, descending air moving towards the earth will heat by compression beginning Sunday.
An east/southeast flow will begin around the bottom side of the high, returning significant amounts of monsoonal moisture into Arizona with lesser amounts into southern California. Currently, I’ll call it 50/50 whether any of this moisture will move into central California. For now, we’ll add a few mid and high level clouds to the forecast beginning Monday and will leave it at that.
The pattern on models varies considerably from Wednesday night on, varying from a trough of low pressure over the western US to maintaining fairly high pressure aloft.
Forecast: Clear skies through Sunday night. Mostly clear with occasional mid and high level clouds Monday through Wednesday. mostly clear Thursday.
