Please accept our apologies.  John’s route to recovery from double pneumonia did not go smoothly.  Additional trips to the ER were required along with stronger antibiotics.  He’s been itching to get back behind his computers, but I made him wait a few extra days, until he could walk around the house outside without assistance.

We’re not sure at this time what the fall season will bring.  John’s oncologist hinted that the PET scan might have shown a false positive, meaning John may not have cancer at all.  If that’s the case (please pray!) John may start his fall schedule a little late, depending on weather patterns, but hopefully will be able to go to two a day shortly after the season starts.

Calling the oncologist today to set up a new PET scan sometime within the next few weeks.  Just waiting for the pneumonia to fully clear up.

You can’t know how much we appreciate you.

October 11, 2021

An impressive trough of cold low pressure currently stretches from western Canada into central California.  At the surface, an impressive low is developing over southern Nevada.  Barometric pressure at SFO is an even 30 inches of mercury while at Las Vegas, the pressure has fallen to 29.65.  Combine all of this with a powerful jet stream running north to south at roughly 130 knots over California and you have the recipe for strong, gusty winds in many areas.  As these winds dive down the valley today, cooler air will spread into the region.  These winds will dry out the atmosphere with dew points falling into the 30s, possibly even the mid to upper 20s where winds begin to die off, probably late tonight.

The trough will begin to move into the middle of the country Tuesday and Wednesday followed by a weaker trough which will keep temperatures well below average.  By Wednesday night, the second trough will have moved into the Rocky Mountain region, allowing upper level high pressure off the California coast to shift eastward for the beginning of a warming trend.  It’ll be Saturday before, temperatures return to seasonal values.

The two week model is interesting this morning.  It indicates a deep trough of low pressure will be along the coast with a higher than average risk of rain.

Forecast:   Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy today.  Mostly clear tonight through next Monday.  Expect strong, gusty winds through tonight, mainly towards the center and west side of the valley with areas of blowing dust.

Two Week Outlook:  October 18 through October 24:  This model is showing a signature for precipitation for much of California.  A deep trough of low pressure will stretch north to south along the west coast, so anything that moves out of the trough will have the chance of spreading precipitation into California.  Temperatures will drop below seasonal averages.

Winds Discussion:  Gusty winds out of the west to northwest will increase today.  Strongest winds will be generally west of highway 99 and will be felt especially along the far western side of the valley where gusts to near 40 MPH will be possible.   Elsewhere, winds will he mainly out of the northwest at 15 to 25 with locally stronger gusts.  As pressure differences start to wane tonight, winds will decrease with winds of generally 15 MPH Tuesday with the exception of the far west side where gusts to 20 will be possible.  Winds Wednesday and Thursday will be generally at or less than 15 MPH.

Rain:  Expect dry conditions for the next seven to possibly ten days.

Frost:  Actually, it is not horribly unusual to discuss frost on the valley floor this early in the season. It does occur.  A much colder air mass is invading the valley behind a dry cold front.  Strong gusty winds will increase today and continue tonight, driving dew points down into the low to mid 30s in many places by later this afternoon and possibly into the mid to upper 20s  along the west side and in Kern County.  Temperatures tonight will generally drop into the 37 to 45 degree range with considerable variance from place to place due to winds and strong mixing.  On Wednesday morning, its possible river bottom and similar locations where skies remain clear and winds are near calm could see lows in the 33 to 36 degree range.  Many locations will range from 37 to 41.  For Thursday morning, coldest locations will drop into the mid to upper 30s with rapid modification after Thursday morning.
