Forecast

October 28, 2021/report

October 28, 2021

There is a sizable area of low clouds covering much of Kings, Fresno, and Madera Counties.  As of  6:00am, Fresno was reporting a broken layer of clouds based at 2,400 feet and an overcast layer at 3,500 feet.  Madera reported overcast skies at 2,500 feet while the Lemoore Naval Air Station reported a broken layer at 2,400 feet.  These clouds will burn off by late morning or early afternoon while the remainder of the valley will be hazy but mostly clear.

Upper level high pressure off the southern California coast continues to strengthen and expand northward along the coast.  Sandberg at an elevation of 4,100 feet has already warmed to 60 degrees, a good indicator of a warm air inversion building above the valley floor.

Most locations on the valley floor are running 1 to 3 degrees warmer than yesterday at this time.  Readings will be well into the 70s with the warmest spots approaching 80 on Friday.

Over the weekend, the northern portion of the high will begin to buckle, allowing a couple of weak systems to move through the northern part of the state, spreading variable clouds overhead during the weekend.  However, I see no rain to interfere with Halloween festivities.

The pattern for next week also appears dry, but my confidence level is considerably lower.  Some kind of storm will approach the California coast late Wednesday and Thursday.  Most models indicate this system will split, which typically sends precipitation either north or south of us.  The minority group of models has this system moving through the valley unabated Thursday of next week with a chance of rain.

Forecast:   Patchy fog and areas of low clouds this morning with hazy sunshine this afternoon.  Areas of fog and low clouds reforming tonight, otherwise mostly clear.  Variable cloudiness at times Saturday through Thursday with patchy night and morning fog.

Two Week Outlook:  November 4 through November 10:  This model is now indicating there’s roughly a 70 percent chance of precipitation for all of central California.  These storms will originate over milder sections of the Pacific Ocean with above average temperatures and relatively high snow levels.

Winds Discussion:  Winds during the late morning and afternoon hours will be generally at or less than 10 MPH through Saturday.  Winds during the night and morning hours will be generally at or less than 7 MPH with  periods of near calm conditions.

Rain:  In the short term, or through the middle of next week, dry conditions will prevail.  Over the past few days, medium range models have been leaning towards a breakdown of the high along the coast, allowing rain to return perhaps about weekend after next.

Frost:  All locations will be above freezing tonight and each night for the foreseeable future.
