Forecast

November 12, 2021/report

November 12, 2021

Fog season is in full swing now.  Every location from Visalia to sacramento is reporting a visibility of ¼ mile or less.  In Kern County and parts of Tulare County, visibility is down to a mile or two.  A strong warm air inversion has the valley sealed up.  At 6:00AM at Sandberg at 4,100 feet, the temperature was 60 degrees.  Most locations on the valley floor were in the mid to upper 40s.  Pressure is slightly higher over the interior west than they are off the southern California coast, which is a weak Santa Ana wind configuration.  At the upper levels of the atmosphere, upper level high pressure is centered just off the southern California coast. The balloon sounding above Oakland this morning indicated winds from 18,000 feet to the surface were light, indicating very stable conditions.  The high will strengthen as we move through the weekend, resulting in a warming trend beginning Friday.  However, that will be highly dependent by how quickly fog and low clouds burn off in the afternoon hours.

Locations away from the low cloud deck will move into the lower 70s. those locations that remain overcast may only warm into the low to mid 50s.  those locations with the best chance of clearing will be those nearest the foothills and over the valley portion of Kern County.

The high will begin to weaken and give way late Tuesday as a weak trough of low pressure moves through. This feature will not bring rain to central California, but it will lower temperatures to near average by the middle of the week. Models for late next week and beyond diverge quite a bit.  Some show the formation of a cut off low well off shore with upper level high   pressure remaining firm over the western US.

Forecast: Low overcast with dense morning fog through next Friday.  Clearing in most areas during the afternoons into hazy sunshine.

Short Term:  Afternoon highs will depend upon the burn off time of the fog and low clouds during the afternoons.

Two Week Outlook:  November 18 through November 24  Models show the storm track moving further north into the Pacific Northwest, meaning central California will only have a minimal chance of precipitation during this period.  Temperatures will largely be governed by fog and low clouds, but will generally be above average.

November: This model indicates November has roughly a 60% chance of above average precipitation with above average temperatures being the dominant theme.  If this occurs, it will have to be during the second half of the month as current models show dry conditions through mid November.

November, December, January: Well, at least this model doesn’t show the continuance of the blocking ridge of high pressure of recent winters. It indicates an equal chance of below or above average precipitation for central California.  Temperatures will remain somewhat above seasonal average.

Wind Discussion:  Winds tonight through Monday will be generally variable at no more than 10 MPH with periods of near calm conditions.

Rain:  No chance of rain for the next 7 to 10 days.

Frost:  Obviously, the frost season is getting off to a slow start this year.  Currently, I see nothing suggesting a cold pattern on the horizon.
