Sunshine is abundant throughout central California today. Visible satellite imagery shows plenty of snow over the Sierra Nevada. There is a remnant low still over southern California which will move into the Desert Southwest tonight. The overall pattern will continue to be amplified where upper level high pressure stretches from off the southern California coast to off the coast of the Pacific Northwest while waves of polar air move down the back side of the high and into the eastern half of the US.
Over the weekend, the flow will become off shore as a big upper high bulges northward into western Canada. This basic pattern will continue through at least Monday. The GFS model shows the formation of a semi cut-off low off the central coast about the middle of next week. Even so, it will be embedded within this persistent high which is keeping conditions in California dry and mild. Meanwhile, the eastern portion of the country is cold and occasionally sunny.
