Forecast

January 19, 2022/report

January 19, 2022

The fog on the valley floor appears patchy. As of 7:00am, Visalia was reporting a visibility of ½ mile, Bakersfield, Porterville, Fresno, and Madera are each reporting 3 miles. Beware, however, infrared satellite imagery shows a finger of fog roughly parallel to Highway 99 from roughly Exeter north. A large ridge of upper level high pressure is centered off the coast of the Pacific Northwest and northern California with a big ridge extending into the northwest territories of Canada. California is on the eastern fringe of the high, putting us in a north/northwest flow aloft. Periods of high clouds will rotate through the high from time to time, but overall skies will remain mostly clear, allowing temperatures to move up into the low to mid 60s each day with the usual filtered sunlight of the valley.

Models continue to portray a blocking ridge pattern through the end of the month. The GFS model tries to form a low somewhere near northern California beginning around the 29th. For now, though, there’s no strong signature for precipitation. What a difference a month makes with the abundant precipitation of December completely drying up for January.

Forecast: Outside of areas of night and morning fog and low clouds and occasional high clouds, it will be mostly clear and hazy through next Wednesday.

Two Week Outlook:  January 26 through February 1: This model has flip flopped back to showing a blocking ridge pattern with high pressure dominating the western 1/3 of the US. The chance of precipitation will remain low with above average temperatures.

January:  This model doesn’t really indicate a trend that would favor above or below precipitation. The active storm track in the Pacific Northwest will continue. Both temperatures and precipitation should be close to seasonal averages.

January, February, March: The trend of below average temperatures of late continues on the 90 day forecast which indicates temperatures will be slightly below average. Below average precipitation is anticipated over the Desert Southwest and the southern half of California with near average precipitation from Fresno County north.

Wind Discussion: Winds will be generally at or less than 6 MPH with periods of near calm conditions through Saturday.

Rain:  Expect dry weather for the next 7 to possibly 10 days.

Frost: Expect temperatures to be above freezing for the next 7 to 10 days.
