February 17, 2022

Under clear skies overnight, temperatures dropped into the low to mid 30s. Thirty was the lowest temperature I could find in the ag locations. Daytime highs today will warm considerably over yesterday as upper level high pressure continues to build in from the west. The freezing level this morning over Oakland jumped up to 11,900 feet. The high will continue to dominate our pattern through Saturday night then will break down beginning late Sunday as a large, cold low moves southward into the western US. Since the origins of this storm are over the cold, northeast Pacific, temperatures will tumble beginning Tuesday with highs only in the mid to upper 50s by the middle of next week. This storm will not be carrying much water, however light scattered showers are certainly possible Monday through Tuesday with the likelihood of snow showers up and down the Sierra Nevada with fairly low snow levels. Another ridge of high pressure will build in from the west Wednesday through Thursday of next week for what appears to be several days of dry weather. Some models this morning are suggesting a pattern change at the end of the month which could bring rain back to central California.

Forecast: Clear skies through Saturday night. Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy Sunday. Increasing cloudiness Sunday night leading to a chance of light showers Monday through Tuesday. A slight chance of showers Tuesday night. Mostly to partly cloudy Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. Mostly clear Wednesday afternoon through Thursday.

Two Week Outlook:  February 22 through February 29  This model moves temperatures to near seasonal values, especially during the second half of the period with high pressure along the Pacific coast. Precipitation will remain unlikely.

February:  The guidance on this model does not show any particular pattern that would favor temperatures or precipitation. Basically, what it’s saying is there’s equal chances of above or below average rain as well as above or below average temperatures. Flip a coin.

February, March, April: There are no dominant trends on this model favoring above or below average precipitation. Temperatures during this period should be fairly close to seasonal values.

Wind Discussion: Winds will be generally at or less than 8 MPH through Sunday with periods of near calm conditions,, mainly during the night and morning hours.

We will be out of the office this afternoon for a medical appointment. Reports will resume tomorrow morning.  Thanks for your understanding.

Rain: Dry weather will continue through at least Sunday. Light scattered showers are possible late Sunday night with a higher risk of light showers Monday through Tuesday. Any amounts appear to be less than .25. dry weather will return by Wednesday, lasting for several days thereafter.  There are models this mooring hinting at a pattern change close to the end of the month which could bring more substantial precipitation. However, this is definitely not written in stone.

Frost: Ivanhoe, Lindsay, and McFarland had each dropped to 30 degrees as of 6:00am. This was the coldest I could find. Low to mid 30s were widespread, as expected. Daytime highs will begin to warm over the next couple of days to the t70 degree mark. This will slowly drag overnight lows up. Lows tonight should be roughly 1 to 2 degrees warmer than this morning, which means most locations will still be in the low to mid 30s. further modification will take place over the weekend when most locations will be above freezing. The next challenge will begin the middle of next week. The air mass associated with a storm moving out of the northeast Pacific is quite cold. On paper, it appears low temperatures Wednesday through Friday of next week will again be in the low to mid 30s. However, we could see a spattering of upper 20s as ti appears the air mass will be slightly colder than the current one. the pattern I mentioned yesterday that would bring in even colder weather does not show up on models this morning. this gives me a great sigh of relief.
