February 18, 2022/afternoon report

Great news! John does not require surgery and to all intents and purposes is cancer free.  Thank you for your prayers and support over the past year. We know those prayers made a difference.

February 18, 2022

Temperatures at midday are in the mid to upper 60s. Lemoore and Merced were at 69 so most locations will top out near 70 this afternoon. A broad area of upper level high pressure covers the eastern Pacific Ocean and the western ¼ of the US. Embedded within this high is a benign upper low off the northern California coast which will harmlessly move southward along the coast with virtually no impact. The high will dominate our weather through Saturday night then will begin to give way Sunday to a very cold low pressure system currently developing over the northeast Pacific and the coastline of northern British Colombia. This storm will move quickly southward and by Tuesday will cover most of the western US. Much of this system is developing over land so precipitation, if any, will be light. It appears the best chance of rain on the valley floor will occur Tuesday night and Wednesday. As I mentioned, this is a very cold system with light snow possible down to 2,000 feet in the surrounding mountains. The low will begin to move eastward Wednesday night, leaving a very cold air mass in its wake. It’s possible we may see some of the coldest nights of the year, even though it is the latter part of February, Wednesday through Friday of next week. More in the frost discussion. Upper level high pressure will begin to nose in from the west by next weekend for warmer highs and a slow moderation of overnight lows.

Forecast: Mostly clear skies through Sunday. Partly cloudy Sunday night. Variable cloudiness Monday through Wednesday night with a slight chance of showers Tuesday. A greater possibility of showers Tuesday night and Wednesday. Clearing late Wednesday night. Becoming mostly clear Thursday through Friday.

Short Term:

Woodlake 33/71/35/72 Hanford 34/73/37/72 Orosi 33/71/36/71

Wind Discussion: Winds will be generally at or less than 8 MPH through Monday with periods of near calm conditions, mainly during the night and morning hours.

Rain:  The next chance of rain will arrive Tuesday with only a slight chance of measurable precipitation. It now appears our best chance at anything measurable will be Tuesday night and Wednesday. A very cold low, most of which has its origins in western Canada, will bring snow levels down to around 2,000 feet in the surrounding mountains. The fact that this is primarily an overland type of storm means it will have limited moisture. Any chance of rain will end Wednesday night with dry weather returning Thursday and lasting for several days thereafter.

Frost: Coldest readings tonight in those traditional frog ponds will dip down to 30 to 32. Most locations will range between 33 and 37. On Sunday morning, most, if not all, locations will be above freezing.

It’s beginning to appear that a spring frost event is on the way. Blended model information pegs Porterville at 32 Wednesday and Friday of next week and 30 Thursday morning. Using Porterville as a base, that would easily put coldest unprotected locations in the mid 20s with most locations in the upper 20s and lower 30s.

A very cold low will develop in northwest Canada and the extreme northeast Pacific. It will dive southward into the western states Sunday night through Wednesday. Snow levels should drop to around 2,000 in the surrounding mountains. The low will pull off to the east Wednesday night, leaving a very cold air mass in its wake, especially for the latter part of February. For now, I think it’s wise to call for upper 20s and lower 30s Wednesday through Friday of next week. Thursday and Friday will be the days of greatest concern as the atmosphere will have stabilized by then with a cold air mass in place. Moderation will begin next weekend as upper level high pressure takes over.
