Forecast

April 13, 2022/afternoon report

April 13, 2022

Temperatures as of 1:00pm are generally in the mid to upper 50s and will end up in the low to mid 60s before the day is done. Dew points have recovered this afternoon into the low to mid 30s. Yesterday at this time, it was breezy with dew points in the mid to upper 20s. high clouds are increasing over northern California ahead of a weather system located a few hundred miles off the Oregon coast. It’s possible a few light showers may spread as far south as a Monterey/Merced line, but the remainder of central California will remain dry.

In the big picture, there’s an intense low near the border of Canada and North Dakota with that second low west of the Oregon coast. The jet stream is flanked over northern California which may again add enough mixing to the atmosphere to help keep temperatures up tonight. However, by and large, conditions will be more stable tonight so widespread low to mid 30s can be expected throughout the growing area. A few locations may actually end up near 40 as warmer air moving in aloft tries to mix down to the surface.

We are still under a zonal, or westerly, flow across the eastern Pacific and into northern and central California. About every 72 hours or so, impulses of low pressure move inland and spread light showers over northern California, but too far to the north to directly impact central California. After tomorrow, the next one will arrive Saturday with only a minimal chance of light showers as far south as Merced County. Yet another is due in next Tuesday, and so the story goes.

Most locations tonight will range from the lower 30s in riverbottom and type locations to the mid 30s and up to near 40 in those warm areas. All locations will be above freezing Friday morning as the air mass continues to modify. Lows Thursday and Friday mornings will generally range in the upper 30s and lower 40s and in the 40s this coming weekend and beyond.

Forecast: Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy tonight. Partly cloudy Thursday and Thursday night. Mostly clear Friday and Friday night. Variable cloudiness Saturday and Saturday night with a chance of light showers, mainly from Merced northward. Mostly clear Sunday through Monday. mostly cloudy with a chance of showers from Fresno north Tuesday.
