June 16, 2022/report

June 16, 2022

There are two main players governing the weather over most of the lower 48. The first is a high center over southern Missouri which dominates the pattern from the southeast US to southern California. This has created a heat belt essentially from coast to coast. The second feature is a low developing off the coast of the Pacific Northwest. For today, we’ll be between these two features, resulting in marginally above average temperatures. The low will dig southward tonight and Friday into northern and central California, leading to a strong surge of marine air into the valley tonight with a much cooler air mass aloft moving overhead Friday through Monday. temperatures will drop significantly over the weekend with readings not even reaching the 80 degree mark in some locations Friday and Saturday afternoons. Typically, these features are dry this time of year for central California and this one will be no exception. There will be some light showers over the Pacific Northwest and the mountains of northern California with partly cloudy skies over central California. This will be a slow moving feature with well below average temperatures continuing through Tuesday. By Sunday, the center of circulation will be over eastern Oregon. By Tuesday, the heat belt will expand back into the Desert Southwest and by the middle of next week, a massive high will extend from coast to coast over the southern tier of states with the center over Arkansas. Triple digits will return by Wednesday and will continue into next weekend. The next cooling trend will be around Sunday the 26.

Forecast: Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy through Monday and much cooler Friday through Monday. mostly clear Monday night through Thursday with a warming trend.

Two Week Outlook:  June 23 through June 29: The overall pattern is for high pressure with above average temperatures. This model also shows the beginning of the monsoon season. So far, a southwesterly flow will maintain dry conditions for central California with an increasing chance of thunderstorms over Arizona and New Mexico.

June:  This model shows a high center over New Mexico and Texas extending into California for marginally above average temperatures for the month with the usual dry conditions prevailing.

June, July, August: This model is hinting at a possible active monsoon season this year once we get into July and August. It’s possible we could see more than the usual amount of afternoon and evening thunderstorms over the Sierra Nevada but the valley will be typically dry with above average temperatures.

Wind Discussion: Winds today will be mainly out of the northwest at 8 to 15 mph, increasing to 15 to 25 mph tonight and at times through Sunday with gusts to 35 mph possible, mainly along the Interstate 5 corridor.

Rain:  Expect dry conditions for at least the next 7 to 10 days.

Frost:  All locations will be above freezing tonight and each night for the foreseeable future.
