Only subtle changes will occur in the world of weather for the next week to ten days. Currently, there’s a large ridge of upper level high pressure blanketing much of the western US. The northern flank of the high will break down, allowing a weak weather system to move through the Pacific Northwest and northern most California. The only effect on central California will be to lower temperatures into the upper 80s and lower 90s Thursday and Friday. The marine layer is only 1,500 feet thick, so no big surge of marine air is anticipated. The air aloft is late summer-like with the temperature at 4,100 feet at a warm 72 degrees as of 5:00am. The balloon sounding over Oakland over night indicated a freezing level of 14,400 feet. A weaker version of high pressure will move in over the weekend and will remain in place for several days, ensuring temperatures will range 5 to 7 degrees above average as we move into October.

Two Week Outlook: October 4 through October 10: This model doesn’t really give guidance for either above or below average rainfall, therefore the chance of rain will remain low. Temperatures will remain marginally above average.
October: This model is really a flip of the coin as far as precipitation is concerned and shows no real bias for above or below average rainfall. It does indicate somewhat above average temperatures will continue.
October, November, December: This model definitely has a bias for above average temperatures for the next 90 days. It also points to above average rainfall for northern California with below average precipitation for southern California. With that in mind, that gives California near average precipitation.
