January 24, 2023 afternoon report

January 24, 2023

Another day with hazy afternoon sunshine out there. There are changes taking place above the valley floor. Sandburg at an elevation of 4100 feet is 10 degrees warmer than 24 hours ago. At Blue Canyon, the temperature is 11 degrees warmer. Most locations on the valley floor underneath the inversion are running 2 to 3 degrees higher. This is all due to a strong ridge of upper level high pressure along the west coast. We now find ourselves under the eastern periphery of the high. Warmer locations this afternoon may eclipse the 60 degree mark with pleasant temperatures due Wednesday and Thursday, as well. Over the weekend, the high will move further off shore, allowing a dry low pressure system from western Canada to dive southward over California Sunday and Monday. most models indicate dry weather over the valley floor. lift, however, will result in a chance of light snow showers over  the high Sierra with a small chance of sprinkles or light showers over the valley floor Sunday night and Monday. this will result in another intrusion of colder air into central California from the north. The air mass’s origins are from western Canada, so snow will fall at lower elevations. Medium range models for next week go back to a dry regime with possibly another round of below freezing temperatures by Tuesday and Wednesday of next week.

Forecast: Other than areas of night and morning fog and low clouds, it will be mostly clear through Friday night with hazy afternoons. Partly cloudy Sunday night and Monday with a slight chance of sprinkles or widely scattered light showers. Clearing by late Monday night. Becoming mostly clear Tuesday with patchy night and morning valley fog.

Woodlake 31/59/32/61 Hanford 31/60/32/63 Orosi 30/61/32/62

Wind Discussion: Winds will be generally at or less than 7 mph late mornings and afternoons and variable in nature. winds during the night and morning hours will be light with extended periods of near calm conditions through Friday.

Rain: Expect dry conditions through Sunday night. A cold and relatively dry system will move through central California Sunday night and Monday. most models on this feature indicate no measurable rain for the valley floor, but do show light showers down the Sierra Nevada. This system’s origins is western Canada. Since it’s taking an overland trajectory, measurable rainfall for the valley is quite doubtful. Models show a new ridge building into California beginning next Tuesday for the start of another prolonged period of dry weather.

Frost:  Temperatures at most locations at midday are running 1 to 3 degrees higher than 24 hours ago. The air over the mountains is considerably warmer. Readings at 4,000 to 5,000 feet are running 10 plus degrees warmer than 24 hours ago. Highs this afternoon will be near the 60 degree mark, however with a dewpoint near 40, significant warmer over the valley floor is not anticipated during the overnight hours. Coldest locations tonight will chill down to 28 to 29 with most other locations between 30 and 34. This air mass will continue under an inversion through the weekend then another cold shot of air will arrive Sunday night and Monday behind what will become a dry cold front. However, no significant cooling is expected with readings just dropping back to where they’ve been the past few nights. The inversion tonight will again be strong with temperatures at 34 feet generally ranging from 4 to 8 degrees warmer at most locations.
