Forecast

September 7, 2019/report

September 7, 2019

Summary: We are now in the beginning stages of what will be a major cooling trend.  Upper level high pressure has now migrated further east, allowing a weak low off the northern California coast to move northeastward into Oregon.  This is setting the instrumentation in proper order for noticeably cooler weather this afternoon then the major cooling will occur Monday through Wednesday as a stronger trough of low pressure will stretch from British Columbia to central California.  Typically, this early in the season precipitation remains well to our north and that will certainly be the case with the current system.  The southwesterly winds aloft will become out of the northwest, spreading in cooler air aloft.

At the surface, the marine layer, which is already beginning to deepen, will initially surge through the Delta.  By this evening it will seep through the gaps and passes along the Coast Range, spreading gusty winds out of the west or northwest.  Local areas of blowing dust can be expected over freshly plowed fields, mainly along the west side where wind gusts as high as 35 MPH can be expected.  Look for readings to tank into the mid 80s Saturday and remain at that level through Wednesday of next week.  The bottom line is a preview of the fall season is at hand which will be refreshing after the long, hot summer.

The heat will return, though, as medium range models this morning are fairly consistent in showing high pressure building over the Desert Southwest then northward and westward over much of the western United States by Friday of next week when readings will again push the century mark.  Keep in mind, historically triple digits can last well into October.

Forecast: Clear and cooler through next Wednesday.  clear with a warming trend Wednesday night through Saturday.

Two Week Outlook: September 14 through September 20:  This model is indicating a blanket of upper level high pressure will be over the western one-third of the U.S., resulting in above average temperatures.  Precipitation chances will remain extremely low.

August: This model projects fairly persistent upper level high pressure over the Desert Southwest.  The monsoon shows up, as it typically does this time of year, but it generally produces little to no precipitation over the valley.  The bottom line, temperatures will be marginally above average with typically dry conditions.

August, September, October: The 90 day outlook doesn’t really give strong indicators one way or the other.  As far as precipitation is concerned, this model is projecting near average totals for the next three months.  This model also projects above average temperatures for much of the western U.S.

Winds:  Winds will increase this afternoon and evening to 10 to 20 MPH out of the west to northwest with gusts to 35 MPH possible along the west side and locally elsewhere through Sunday interspersed with period of lighter winds.  Winds Monday and Tuesday will also be in the 10 to 20 MPH range, mainly out of the northwest with stronger gusts, especially Tuesday afternoon and evening.

Rain: Expect dry conditions indefinitely.
