Forecast

August 10 2020/report

August 10, 2020

Summary:   More triple digit temps are on the way.  Slight cooling will occur Tuesday through Thursday due to a slight weakening of high pressure aloft.  We will not have any assistance from the marine layer this week.  There’s a minor influx of sea breeze moving into the Delta, however any cooling will only be felt from Stockton northward.  There are two moisture sources we will have to monitor later this week.  Models show some mid and high level moisture trying to move in from the  monsoon into southern and central California late Wednesday through early Friday.  We also have a tropical storm which is located roughly 500 miles to the south of Cabo San Lucas.  Tropical storm Elida is forecast to become a hurricane over the next 24 hours.  Currently, Elida is moving in a northwest direction at 15 MPH.  as the storm moves further out to sea and weakens this week, it’s possible some spin off clouds could be caught up in the south/southwest flow aloft.  No precipitation is expected for the valley, however we may see an uptick in afternoon and evening thunderstorms over the Sierra Nevada.   Currently it’s hot out there but it will be even  hotter Friday through Sunday as strong upper level high pressure parks over Arizona and southern California.

Forecast:  Clear and hot through Wednesday.  Mostly clear to partly cloudy Wednesday through Friday.  Mostly clear and hot Friday through Monday.

Two Week Outlook:  August 17 through August 23:  This model indicates upper level high pressure over the desert southwest will be the more dominant feature, resulting in at least marginally above average temperatures.  The monsoon is still nowhere to be found, so dry dusty conditions will continue.

August:  Typically, especially this time of year, long range outlooks by NOAA reflect the global warming madness.  This model indicates above average temperatures and largely dry conditions.

August, September, October:  Just like the 30 day outlook, this longer range outlook reflects above average temperatures everywhere, including California.  This model does not reflect either above or below average precipitation, although as we head into September, we will have to keep a closer eye on the tropics.

Winds Discussion:  Winds through Thursday will be mainly out of the northwest at 5 to 12 MPH afternoons and evenings and 3 to 6 MPH nights and early mornings with periods of near calm conditions.

Rain Discussion: Expect dry conditions for the next 7 to 10 days.
