August 9, 2022/report

August 9, 2022

The latest round of monsoon moisture is moving from south to north into central California in the form of variable cloudiness. This will trigger isolated thunderstorms over the mountains and deserts of southern California and the Sierra Nevada this afternoon and evening. Our weather is still being governed by two main features. First is an upper low located just off the California/Oregon border. The second is an upper high located over the Four Corners region. The placement of these two features has created a southerly flow which is allowing that monsoonal juice to flow up here from northwest Mexico. As the low moves farther north along the Oregon coast, the winds aloft will become more southwesterly, nudging the monsoon back into Nevada Wednesday for a return to mostly clear skies. In the meantime, the high over the Four Corners region will expand a bit  further west over the weekend, once again turning the winds southerly for another chance of PM storms over the Sierra and occasional cloud cover over the valley. Most models are showing an expansion of the southwestern high into California next week as temperatures level off into the lower 100s. in the meantime, mid to upper 90s will prevail through Friday. The marine layer is roughly 1,200 feet deep and is seeping through Pacheco Pass where winds are sustained at 17 mph. Up at the Delta, winds at Travis Air Force Base are sustained at 23 mph. as a result, from Merced County north, low to mid 90s will be the norm due to the marine influence.

Forecast: Partly cloudy today and tonight. Mostly clear Wednesday through Friday night. Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy Saturday through Tuesday.

Two Week Outlook:  August 15 through August 21  This model continues to show a very active monsoon moving into the Desert Southwest, possibly affecting central and southern California from time to time. Temperatures will be marginally above average with above average precipitation.

August:  This model is quite generic, indicating the same trend of high pressure resulting in generally above average temperatures for the month of August. Precipitation will be near average, which means very little to none. This model continues to show an active monsoon over the west which may visit California from time to time.

August, September, October: Upper level high pressure will be more dominant over the next few months, resulting in somewhat above average temperatures. This year’s monsoon, which has been an active one so far, will result in a continuation of above average precipitation over the Desert Southwest and possibly the Sierra Nevada.

Wind Discussion:  Winds will be mainly out of the northwest afternoons and evenings at 5 to 12 mph through Friday. Winds during the night and morning hours will be light to near calm.

Rain: Expect dry weather for at least the next 7 to 10 days.

Frost:  All locations will be above freezing tonight and each night for the foreseeable future.
