Building upper level high pressure is continuing the warming trend this afternoon. Most locations on the valley floor are running 3 to 5 degrees higher than 24 hours ago. The warming trend will peak Friday with warmest locations teasing with the 70 degree mark. The high responsible for the mid conditions is already beginning to give way over the Pacific Northwest as a trough of low pressure digs southward from western Canada. Models have been consistent in showing this feature morphing into a closed low over central California Saturday. Light showers will become likely over the Sierra Nevada and eventually the kern County mountains as the low slides southward into southern California by Sunday morning. There remains a low chance of measurable rain on the valley floor from Saturday into Sunday morning. In the unlikely event precipitation does materialize, amounts should be no more than .10. The flow behind this system will be out of the north/northeast which will spread a much cooler air mass into central California. Readings will drop from near 70 Friday to the low to mid 50s Saturday and Sunday. Local frost will also be possible Sunday morning if skies clear in time. About the time this systems lands over northern Baja, a second moisture starved system will drop from western Canada into the interior western US Monday night and Tuesday. Models have also consistently indicated California will be on the western side of this low. This low is a very cold system which may result in widespread frost this upcoming week. like its predecessor, there is a small risk of light showers, mainly Monday night and Tuesday. Beyond Tuesday, a dry, cold, northerly flow will develop over California, resulting in below average temperatures and several days of dry weather.
Forecast: Areas of fog, mainly up the center of the valley north of Delano after midnight tonight. Otherwise it will be mostly clear through Friday. Partly cloudy Friday night. Variable cloudiness Saturday through Sunday morning with a small chance of sprinkles of isolated light showers. Clearing Sunday afternoon. Mostly clear Sunday night through Monday. partly cloudy Monday night. Variable cloudiness Tuesday through Wednesday morning with a minimal chance of scattered light showers. Becoming mostly clear Wednesday afternoon through Thursday.

Wind Discussion: Winds will be generally at or less than 6 mph with periods of near calm conditions through Friday. Winds Friday night will be out of the northwest at 8 to 15 mph. Winds Saturday will remain out of the north to northwest at 8 to 15 mph with locally stronger gusts. Winds Saturday night and Sunday will become light and variable with periods of near calm conditions.
Rain: A trough of low pressure will morph into a closed low over central California Saturday. Light showers will become likely over the Sierra Nevada and later over the Kern County mountains. This system will be passing over land rather than water, so it is starved for moisture. Even so, with a cold pool of air settling in over the valley Saturday,, sprinkles or isolated light showers cannot be ruled out. In the event light showers do occur, less than .10 is all that can be expected. Another very cold system will arrive Tuesday. Again,, snow showers will be likely over the mountain areas with only a small chance of light showers over the valley floor Tuesday into Wednesday. Once again, if precipitation does happen to fall, less than .10 will be the rule. After Wednesday, expect several days of dry weather.
Frost: All locations will be above freezing Friday and Saturday mornings. A relatively cold low will drop into central California Saturday. Cloud cover and wind conditions will determine temperatures with low to mid 30s being likely Sunday morning and again Monday. a very cold low will drop into the western US Tuesday followed by a dry north/northeast flow. Currently, I believe Wednesday through Friday of next week will be governed by upper 20s to low 30s. at this point, that’s a low confidence call as we will be dealing with upslope cloud conditions, wind conditions, and the usual cold weather challenges.
